Headlining

Hi, Apologies for posting in English, I am a UK citizen temporarily living near Kaiserslautern (Landstuhl),I am in the process of restoring a 1971 1750 GTV Mk2.
I am at the stage where I want to pay someone to complete the headlining but I am struggling to find anyone. Can anyone help with a recommendation of a tradesman in the area or know of any good garages that may be able to make a recommendation.
Similarly I need to get some parts chrome plated but again I am struggling to find anywhere local so any recommendations for that would be great.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Phil,

Sorry, I am not located in your area but in northern Bavaria...
Therefore I cannot help you with local craftsmen.

But some comments from my side:

I am also currently restoring a GT 1300 Junior from 1966.

The body is at the paintshop at the moment, but in about two weeks it will be back. I removed my headlining myself before and it seems not very difficult to install. Anyway if the car is back I will do it myself with a new one which is available pretty cheap.
If your Problem is not your time, then try it yourself!

Concerning chrome parts, I own a 1750 gt Mk2 as well.

This car has hardly any chrome parts. Most parts are stainless steel, which is polished.
Only small parts like door handles are chromed, but these are made of some kind of zinc cast metal which is very difficult to chrome plate if damaged.

But these parts are available new for reasonable prices in Germany...

Companies which do chrome plating in good quality are pretty rare in Germany because the environmental standarts for them are very strict here.
I know some of those companies which had to shut down because of this in the last few years.

Hope I could help...

Best Regards

Juergen

Juergen

Please do not apologise, thank you for your comments. The bit I want to get chromed is the choke and autothrottle levers, I have a very old one that is quite scruffy and needs something doing to it. I may look at silver paint as an option.
As to headlining......i am quite nervous about taking the plunge (sorry english phrase), there are instructions on AlfaBB but it still seems quite involved, and obviously it is something that will be very much on show!
I will keep researching for now.

Phil

Hi Phil,

The levers you can hardly see...
And you do not need them often. You can buy spray cans with chrome paint...
If it´s the only part I would go for this way in the moment.
You can always change these small things at a later time.

The headlining on my GTJ: I removed it very carefully just to learn how it is fixed and what is the material underneath which insulates...
I think it is not very difficult to fix it if you have a new part and some 1mm foam material which is underneath. Important to start with the square above the rear seats which is fixed with a thin steel frame. to tighten the rest needs some time but should not be a problem.

I have never done this before but since I removed it I am confident that I can fix it again.

Don´t worry about English, I am a native German but was working and living for nearly 17 years in English speaking countries, alone 12 years in Malta.

Sorry all other users for answering in English, I just want to help...
I repeat this in German .

Entschuldigung an alle anderen User, dass ich in Englisch antworte, aber ich wollte versuchen zu helfen...

Good luck

Juergen

Jaja, Jürgen, wir haben schon verstanden.
Du wolltest nur mit Deinem guten Englisch prahlen

Da werde ich nicht drankommen, aber trotzdem

with a little help for Alfa-Friends

Hi Phil,
For chrome-plating you could get in contact with Andreas Lange, located in Rinteln in Lower-Saxonia.

https://www.metallveredlung-rinteln.de/

He works very well and has affordable prices.
You can send him your parts by post.

I just brought him two door levers this week, which are on the same zinc-die-cast material as your choke-lever and he told me, what Juergen already wrote you before.

When the surface is already damaged or scruffy, the zinc-base endangers a good chrome-surface. The result will be visible only after the chromation process, so you´ll get no guarantee by the firm for a good result.

Therefore, I´ll buy two new levers for the same price, I would have paid for a risky chrome-plating. Check, if e.g. www.myalfagroup.com has your choke levers in stock.

I self-mounted my new headlining in a 1600 Junior last Winter. Basically, it´s not very complicated, if you start with the inner square frame mounted to the head. For strengthening the tissue, you should use 50-70 document clips to fix the headlining in the window frames meanwhile the glue is drying.

For good results you need a heated garage, much time, patience and at least 3-4 crates of beer to empty on the side. A forum member named Oliviero wrote a very good manual (in German), which I followed to a good result. Perhaps you can translate it in English. Just write me an email to figge.mereu(ät)arcor.de for the manual and some photos.

Some very good self-sticking insulant material for the underneath you find at www.isoproq.de.
I used it for the complete restoration of my car and mounted 3 layers of different thickness under the headlining to get maximum acoustic insulation.

I hope to give you some helpful tips to continue. Go on!

Supermichi,

So perfekt ist mein Englisch auch nicht...

Könntest du mir das Manual für den Einbau des Himmels vielleicht auch schicken an juergen.schneyer(ät)t minus online.de?

Viele Grüße

Jürgen

@ Phil: Sorry for posting in German, I just asked for mailing me the manual to fit the headlining as well...
