I have owned my 164 Q4 for one year now and would like to share some of my experiences driving and maintaining it and also ask a few questions
I have read many of the German posts in this forum about the Q4, but will write this in English, since my German is not that good.
My Q4 has done 285.000km and I have done 35.000 enjoyable km in it
I had a 33 16V before, so it was quite a change going to the Q4, but an improvement since I am doing a lot of Autobahn-driving for which the 33 is not very suitable.
I have had an engine pre-heater installed, because it is parked outside all year (in Scandinavia) and have not regretted that! Apart from that the car is original.
When I had the car inspected last year the HC-level was to high (went outside the scale!). This was fixed by changing one of the lambda-sensors, which made the level drop to 81. At one point the engine stopped and would not start again. The error was an impuls-sender in the starter system (don't know the English name for it).
3 months ago I had the clutch replaced, since the old one was worn out. Unfortunately, it is necessary to take out both the engine and the gearbox to do this, so that was 11,5 hours of labour at the garage
However, changing gear was much better afterwards. From what I have read, it is not possible to rebuild the gearbox, is that true
Next step is to have the front right suspension arm (querlenker) replaced and from what I have read in another post, they should be identical for all 164's. Can someone confirm this? Furthermore, the rear shock absorbers need to be replaced, so I have bought a new - expensive - set (with the help of a friendly German
), which will be installed soon. I'm really looking forward to that, since I have to be a little bit careful when driving at the moment. I have found out that the wire for the front shocks have been cut, so next step is to find out if there is a signal, so I can make it work and put it back together. It has not been stuck in sport mode at any time, while I have had the car.
The LCD display is (of course) not working, but I have read about a fix in this forum. However, I couldn't figure out if anyone actually found a permanent fix for this...?
When the engine is under load above 4000rpm (not at a steady speed) a whistling sound occures. Does anyone have an idea of what could be the cause? The engine seems to be in good condition, it has only used 2½ liters of oil in 20.000km
I have had all the fluids changed in the 4WD-system, but occasionally the check-lamp lights up. Since the ABS-light is on all the time at the moment (probably a sensor), I assume that is the reason for this
Has anyone had any success in finding errors with the test system for the 4WD? I read that someone in this forum has been to many different garages, but not with much luck...?
Also the airbag lamp is on and the test system for this says that it is the lamp that is faulty. That is not the case. Someone got any experience with resetting this system or replacing a sensor?
By the way, mine has the standard leather seats, not the Recaro-sports with memory. The standard seats are still very nice, though
Well, this is a long story, but maybe somebody can make use of the things I have experienced and hopefully somebody can answer some of my queations
