Im Finale der IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge TCR führte ein Bruch der Hinterradaufhängung nach Kollision im Fahrzeug von Roy Block zum vorzeitigen Ende der Titelträume für das Team der Giulietta Veloce. Mit den meisten Einzelsiegen im Laufe des Wettbewerbs sicherte sich KMW Motorsports USA dennoch einen sehr guten 2. Platz in der Championship-Gesamtwertung.

Auszüge aus einem Interview mit Antonio Caruccio (Head of Communications Romeo Ferraris):

What do you think are the key characteristics of FIA ETCR?

I’ve always been very critical of Electric Racing, because most of the time you are not really looking to be sustainable, but only promoting a new ideology. It’s also something still important, but FIA ETCR for the first time has created a consistent way to approach racing doing also something for the planet being sustainable inside the paddock, plus showing concrete activities aside from the racing. Talking about “pure” racing, the series is amazing. The level of the drivers is incredible, then short battles mean to have a lot of actions on track, the drivers fight really hard. This is not the best for my heart in the Hot Zone, but people from home love it, as well on the social media we have a great material to show, helped by a unique and innovative format.

What are the key characteristics of Romeo Ferraris?

It sounds like a mantra, but it’s true. We are a family. I mean, personally, my relationship with the Romeo Ferraris brand goes much over the working skills and attitude. Michela is one of my best friends in “real life” and this helps to give, from my side, 200% of my effort for anything related to our brand. You might say that this is because we are Italians, but (un)fortunately I can tell you it’s because it’s us. Anyone in the team is very passionate, the mechanics did an incredible job many times over the years, the race department is one of the smallest in the paddock, but thanks to the coordination and motivation of Michela and Mario, they’re not only great minds but super passionate, motivated and winning people. When we win, someone in the paddock is surprised by the effort we put in celebrations, but trust me, it is the same effort the guys put in their ordinary work and I think it is nice from all to take their own reward.

What do you see as being the future of electric touring car racing?

As per my Socratic approach to life, I don’t think I have all the answers, but I try to ask the right questions. So I don’t know where the future will bring, both racing and road cars development, but it’s important that something moved in our consciences over the last few years. We’ve only one planet, and we’ve resources such as air and water that are very democratic. So any of us needs to do something for global well-being. For sure, in terms of marketing, a series like FIA ETCR suits the manufacturers much better than a formula car. With ETCR you have the chance to show the models you are selling on the market, by showing the clients and the audience how those cars can race. It’s exactly what Touring Cars did over the years, and when all the manufactures will understand this, imagine how the field of FIA ETCR can be!

Das ist eine durchaus überraschende (und erfreuliche) news: Romeo Ferraris zeigt großes Interesse am Wiedereinstieg in die (W bzw. H)TCR-Klasse übernächstes Jahr. Tests dafür laufen bereits. In der BTCC ist ein ähnliches System schon im Einsatz.

Global introduction of TCR’s hybrid system delayed to 2024

The WSC Group has announced that the global introduction of the new hybrid system for TCR cars had been postponed to 2024.
The completion of the technical development through an extensive testing programme with the cooperation of Romeo Ferraris team had aroused strong interest from manufacturers and promoters; however, due to changes in the touring car landscape, the programme has been put back a year.

“This decision has been dictated by the new scenario that opened following the change of format of World Touring Car competition,” explained WSC President Marcello Lotti.
“The launch of the TCR World Ranking that resulted in the launch of the TCR World Tour has advised us to reconsider the application of the hybrid system. In fact, this would have precluded the competitors of national championships with cars without the hybrid system to vie on equal terms with the TCR World Tour regulars. We have explained the situation to the promoters who wished to introduce the hybrid system from next year, telling them that their requests will be fulfilled in 2024.”

Ok, es geht noch ein bisschen weiter overseas mit unserer alten Dame. Tom Oliphant aus der BTCC unterschreibt einen 2-Jahres-Vertrag für die TCR Australia bei Ashley Seward Motorsport.

Der ein oder andere, der hier mitliest, wird sich vielleicht fragen, was ist mit der e-Giulia 2023? Tja, ich weiss es nicht. Bislang gibt es keinen Veranstaltungskalender oder irgendetwas Neues dazu von der FIA. Gibt es möglicherweise Probleme mit der Lade-Infrastruktur oder mit dem Format i.a.?

Auf der Website von Romeo Ferraris findet sich zumindest folgende Info:

"...In der Zukunft der WSC, die das technische Reglement der TCR erstellt und verwaltet, wird es einen Hybridantrieb geben, und Romeo Ferraris hat bei diesem Prozess sofort eine Schlüsselrolle gespielt. Dank der Erfahrungen, die der Hersteller aus Opera mit dem TCR-Projekt Alfa Romeo Giulietta und der vollelektrischen Giulia in der FIA ETCR gesammelt hat, wurde er von der WSC Group ausgewählt, das neue Hybridmodul auf der Rennstrecke zu testen.

In den letzten Monaten hat Romeo Ferraris ein Beispiel der Giulietta TCR zur Verfügung gestellt, nachdem die notwendigen technischen Lösungen untersucht und umgesetzt wurden, um den Mitarbeitern der WSC Group die Möglichkeit zu geben, Daten und Erkenntnisse im Hinblick auf 2024 zu sammeln, wenn das Renndebüt der TCR-Autos in Hybridversion geplant ist..."

Following a series of discussions with various stakeholders, Discovery Sports Events announces it will not promote the ETCR, eTouring Car World Cup during 2023.

Over recent months, there have been extensive discussions around the next phase of the series, including its sporting and regulatory format as a priority. In particular, recognising the importance of further integrating the traditional Touring Car DNA within the series to create the best stage for electric car racing. One with a packed grid that maximizes the appeal to fans, manufacturers, and drivers.

Despite the efforts made by all parties to finalise the new sporting and regulatory framework that meets the needs of the manufacturers, the necessary conditions could not be implemented in a satisfactory manner ahead of launching a full season.

Die FIA äussert sich in einer Stellungnahme enttäuscht über den Ausstieg des ETCR-Promoters 'Discovery Sports Events' für die Saison 2023. Die beteiligten Werke sowie Romeo Ferraris sehen in der Serie dennoch Zukunftschancen und hoffen auf ein Re-Launch mit optimierten Bedingungen.

Romeo Ferraris confident ETCR ‘has a future’

Romeo Ferraris General Manager Michela Cerruti says she feels ‘there is a future’ for the ETCR eTouring Car World Cup despite Discovery Sports Events announcing that it would not promote the series in 2023.

Romeo Ferraris had been the only Independent outfit to develop a car for ETCR, with the Alfa Romeo Giulia going up against factory-backed entries from both Hyundai and Cupra.

Despite running to a smaller budget, the Italian squad secured a round win in both 2021 and 2022 – with Phillip Eng and Maxime Martin – and would take a best championship finish of fourth with Martin last year.

ETCR had been the focus of Romeo Ferraris’ racing activities across the past two years, with the team confident that there was a future for the series despite Discovery’s announcement.

“As Romeo Ferraris, we are sorry to hear the news and we would like to thank Discovery for the commitment and efforts they put in the series,” Cerruti told TouringCarTimes.

“We were among the first ones to believe in ETCR and its concept, and therefore we are sure there is a future for it – it is just a matter of time.

“From our side, our main business concerns the road cars department and this is the company field that we are focusing on at the moment.”
