I have a 156 1.8 TS from the year 2000. After a couple of months I had some problems with the gearbox, especially in 3rd, which apparantly was caused by a synhcromesse-ring that got loose. The item was grinded to peaces, causing me not te able to shift into 3rd, and later on also 2nd gear. The dealer installed a revised gearbox in january 2001. In december 2001, the gearbox main shaft ball-bearing gave way, which ended in getting a new gearbox again.
Now, only 5 months later, I again have problems with 3rd gear. If I shift into 3rd, the gearbox jumps out of 3rd.
After the initial problems, beginning of 2001, I was paying attention to my shifting, trying not to to do it fast. And although I'm a "fast" driver, I still take care of the way I shift.

Now I'm wondering; am I the only one experiencing this? I never had this before in any other car, also not in the 146 I had before.
Or did I find the achilles-heal of the 156?:-{

My 1.8 SW from August 2000 doesn't shift gears as quickly as I would like, but no real problems or strange sounds (now 60.000km)

Well, at 60K I already had my 3rd gearbox installed. My car is also from august 2000, and has run 94.000 KM (should have been more, but it takes them an incredible 4 weeks to install a new gearbox ....... well, the installation takes 1 day, but the messing around with the lease company and the Fiat people increased it a little ;)

Same with me. Shifting gears in a quick mode sometimes causes problems ,which later on disappear.

I'm about to replace the gear oil in my 92 spider with Redline 75W90 NS. I'll let you know what the result is. It definitely needs some help!!

Well' I'm at 98000 KM now, and 3rd gear doesn't work any longer.
Even shifting back doens't work. I'm up for a long talk with the dealer and the lease company. I love my Alfa, happy to see it every morning, but this is balony.

Last time, when they installed the third gearbox, I'd already asked them if they could measure the way I'm using the car and the gearbox. Apparantly, as they said, they already read the cars' computer output, and found nothing uncommon. I guess they can monitor revs, but speed of shifting too? WOuld be cool though if they could.

The gearbox oil is done by the dealer, and checked every 20.000 Km when the car has it's regular maintenance. So I guess they use the right oil.

Hallo from Greece.
The local Auto moto und sport car magazine took a new 147 1.6 twin spark for a 20.000 km test drive non-stop in a track and guess what happened after the first 7000?
The only way the car could run with the 3rd gear was only when the gear knob was manually held in the 3rd gear place!!!

Hi,
i had to give up my 155 1.8 at 290.000kms. Guess why? It was not possible to shift into fifth gear anymore. It was a pity... the car was still running and looking very nice :(

Ciao, ulli.

Well, "nice" to read that other people have had the same problem after all. If the test-team from greece would have driven that faulty 147 gearbox for a longer time, they would have found out that even trying to manually keep it in gear wouldn't help.

Felleas, would you happen to know in what article they wrote that. Can I get a copy of that digitally? It's probably in greek, but I'lll cope with that.

When I try to put the gear into 3rd right now, my heart skips a beat at the cracking noise from the gearbox while the shift-stick is being pushed out of 3rd gear.

I'm still waiting for the verdict from the lease company and the dealer about what to do with the problem now.
