My tach seems to be malfunctioning. Specifically, it will get up to around 2k RPM and sit there. Won't go any higher even though I gun the engine.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
Thanks,
Glenn 91 Spider
there is a little converter at the 91´er spider. your tach is digital but the source is analog. check the converter (clean up) and check the wave (I hope this is the correct word) of the analog side!

I'll check the sensor this weekend. HOpefully that will be the problem (easy fix :) )
Hi
I've got the same problem at my 92 Spider - i've just cleaned the backplane off the copit inlay - the Contacts are little screws... clean them an it should work again. The second point ist the converter as written above...
I think it will be an electrical contact problem...

I took the unit out last night and cleaned all the contacts. Still not functioning. The past few days it hasn't been registering at all.
I will try to locate the sensor and check it. Is it likely the gauge itself has failed? Can you buy just the tach motor and not a whole instrument panel??
Thanks to everybody for the assistance.
Glenn
I think it is the converter, not the tach.
did you have such a converter? and a "wave" on the other side?
I never saw a single tach motor...

Hi Glenn, !hello!
when i understood you you're a problem with the R/PM tachometer.
When the electrical contact's at the backplane are right you should clean the Instrument carefully.
When you turn the pointer to the End of the scale it should fall back to the zero point. Aperiodic the pointer hang... You should oil the baering with a drop oil. I've attract the screws at the backplane too - that has helped by my tochometer.
When that dosen't helps - check the contacts at the ignition - but in my opinion that cant be the failure cause the tacho wouldn't work at all when the contact wouldn't be there...
The Answer of our Question to by the Motor is no - you can't.
I hope that help's....
:)
kind regards -
Dirk
When you have need to buy an new tach - look at www.spider-point.com - the company is in germany, but they're having also an english page - there you can get most of the Alfa Spider parts...
By the way -
Andre's talking about the Miles / h tachometer....
:-?
@ Andre: ich gehe davon aus das er den Drehzahlmesser meint...

I've noteced Spider Point. Their prices seem very good, do people have good experience using them?
Yes!
I've ordered thome things there and there were no problems at all. The delivery was very quick and the payment always OK.
I think you can order there without any Risk.

This is my first post. This is my first day as an alfa romeo owner.
I must admit I didn't look as closely as I have in the past when purchasing a car, but I felt $4800 for a 91 Alfa was worth finding bugs. And there are a handful of them.
Anyway, I was driving around today and noticed my tach never redlines. Actually it never makes it up past 2000RPM. I'm thinking I have the same issue here.
Can someone tell me exactly where I'm looking for this converter and the other contact points?
Thanks
