Does anyone out there know how to import a 2000 gtv or spider to the US? I am thinking of doing this if it is possible. Thanks
Hi Viper!
There aren't to many US-citizens in this forum but maybe on http://www.gtv6.org you'll find that kind of information. I think I remember some of the owners there did import their cars from Europe. But I'm not quite sure.
If you import one from Europe and if it is from nothern Europe it might be rusty. I heard that Alfa's in California didn't suffer that much under rust. Maybe you can find a good one there. I don't think the price difference is that big.
Cheers,
Tigou
Ciao Viper,
where do you come from? maybe it is very easy (like delaware) and maybe it is to expensive (maryland, florida, NY).
The import is easy. If you need some help: andre@alfisti.net :-)
Kind Regards
André
... as so often in life, it is possible, but.... and that's quite a big BUT at that, for New Car
As you certainly know better than I do, the US of A has rather stringent regulation for car safety as well as exhaust emissions.
While new generation Alfas certainly meet the US exhaust emissions, or they can be adjusted to do so without much hassle, there is a bigger hurdle to be passed: The typification or homologation, which as far as I know requires a crash test among others. I know for sure that there are possibilities to
avoid the crash test, but first you need to find someone in the transport department to listen to you. In case you can find someone else in the US. who has previously imported that car
into the US. that would be a great help for sure for the typification.
Shipping the car and doing the Export/Import Papework, I agree with Andre, is easy.
For an old car, if over 25 years of age, it's much easier, also because older models of Alfas were sold in the U.S. so that
there is no hassle with the homologation and if not previously
homologated, then this procedure is much much easier than with a brand new one.
I hope I did not discourage you from buying a product of 'our'
favourite marque.
Ciao,
Joachim
