I do not have a 156, but this is a problem that comes up from time to time on the 2 litre TS. Is it worse when the engine is cold...and does it show itself as a flat spot between 2000-3000 revs?

If nothing shows up on a diagnostic (and it rarely does) then try the following:

1) Cleaning the throttle body

2) Rigorously checking for air leaks in all plastic/rubber connectors/hoses on the intake side of the engine. (Even a tiny crack can really mess things up)

3) lastly changing the air mass sensor (though this should show on a diagnostic)

I am not sure if Alfa have come up with a 'fix', but it is certainly worth having a go at them. If they pretend you are the only one who has this problem...they are not telling the truth.

Lastly...you might do all the above and still not effect a complete cure, but this is what is helping in many cases.
