I am going to purchase a 3L V6 for a conversion and was wondering if anyone could tell me what oil comsumption
could be expected on a used engine. I had an Italian mech.
tell me every Alfa V6 he had burnt about 1 and 3/4 litre per 3K miles. This was as he was trying to sell me a 164L. The 164L he was trying to sell me had 190K Kilometers on it. He said that was normal!

I drive a 156 2.0 an he is very thisty for oil.

The maximum consumption was about 1 litre per 1kkm.

Hi, there are various aspects to be taken into consideration, 1. how old is the engine, 2. who owned before, 3. how much are you willing to spend? Oil consumption is also one of the problems with the 3l engine but the performance is also breathtaking. Are you willing to comprimise?? Dave

Thankyou for replying!
I guess even when the 3L V6 was new it used more than a litre
per 5thousand kms. This seems to be my bookmark since we in Canada have only over the last 40 years or so gone to metric.
Can't figure why these engines would use so much oil!
Have to build a new garage before I can commence with the conversion anyway.

Most of these engines use quite a lot of oil, and a lucky few have engines that do not.

The only hard and fast rule where Alfa engines is concerned is that high oil consumption does not necessarily mean there is anything seriously wrong with the engine.

As long as you get about 4 bar oil pressure when cold (60lb/sq in). This falls when the engine is hot, and at idle you might get as little as 1 bar (about 15lbsq/in). The vital thing is that when hot the oil pressure gauge needle should spring to attention when you rev the engine to about 3500 revs (no need to rev its nuts off)

Also, its not worth trying to cure it..many have tried, and most have lost their sanity and lots of money in their failed attempts.

Why do they do it?? Don't know, but many other manufacturers such as VW have similar oil consumption profiles..you just don't get to hear about it so much.

This is a construction quirk of the V6 engine of Alfa. Can't quite be compared to the GM or other ready available machines in Canada. A litre every 5000 km is completely normal.
I wouldn't think too much about it, just check the oil level every now and then
and top up if necessary. Compared with what they pay in Europe, oil is super-cheap in Canada.
