Greetings from a new member. If this post would be better in another forum, feel free to relocate it.

I have a '72 Spyder that has the traditional "weak" 2nd gear synchronizer. Just recently, though, it has begun a new behavior.

When driving, the transmission shifts normally. That is, pause a tick between 1st and 2nd for the synchros to catch up, and double-clutch from 3rd to 2nd if speed is high.

However, when I come to a stop the tranny does not want to return to 1st, 2nd or reverse. It is as though there is no synchronizer there. Which is odd, because the synchros work normally when driving.

Could this be a sign that the grease is low in the tranny? Or are the synchros just shot, and I'm lucky they still work while driving? Any thoughts?

Also, the synchros work much better (when driving) when the tranny is warmed.

Has anyone tried anything in the tranny besides 90-weigt grease?

I have heard of people adding PTFE (Teflon, "Slick 50" to their tranny. I have even heard of some people replacing the 90 weight with ATF fluid (but not in an Alfa).

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

If you drive the standard-oil/fluid it works great! You don´t have to change it :) Check the gauge of the fluid/oil and the quality.
